Beach romp saga ends

The tabloids, especially in Britain, were initially screaming that Michelle & Vince were facing six years in jail.

In fact they got three months and didn't go to to jail as they appealed the sentence.

Now the Appeals Court has suspended the jail term, so they just have to pay Dh1,000 and they're deported.

From the hysteria at the beginning it kind of fizzled out.

There's a small report in Gulf News here.

Why the leniency?

On one hand we hear that culture is being eroded by evil expats.

This was the perfect chance to show that people showing the middle finger to Muslim values would be punished........

However they get to go home after paying 1000 dhs

Tomorrow we will again hear how most expats are not respecting the local culture......

Seabee, I was at a well-known beachfront hotel the other day, sitting in the outdoor lobby area. People were screaming and shouting down below. I peeked, and saw people standing on the chairs/tables; the table cleared of all food. When the waitress was asked to sort out the noise, she responded "It's a Friday brunch" - and it was 7 pm.

According to news reports, hotels were issuing "guidance" notes on tables in the light of this recent case, advising what the customs of the UAE are.

How come a blind eye was turned on this kind of behaviour, despite the news? This crowd was at it since the moment we took our seats, and honestly, I thought it was some kind of theatre act being performed!
